Even today the real jerry cans are not approved for fuel transport by the US DOT. They instead insist on people using ridiculous EPA-approved plastic cans. So worried are they about vapor loss that they've designed spouts that won't flow liquid worth a damn. So they trade vapor loss for frequent spills on the ground. Ironically, a closed jerry can won't let any vapor out anyway. Typical government idiocy.

You can, however, get authentic NATO jerry cans that are perfectly functional for fuel storage. They have to be sold as "water cans," with a wink and a nod.

I have several of them made by a NATO supplier in Latvia. They are truly an ingenious design. Everything was thought of, and the design has remained virtually unchanged since the 1930s.

I have a contraband supply of NATO "jerrycans" for my generator fuel. Because you see, just like magazines that hold more than 10 rounds, they are verboten here in Kommiecticut. However, the Lexington Container Company will sell them and ship them no matter where you live, laws be damned! The link is below:

These are the real deal....brand new built to NATO spec by the manufacturer. Beware of cans from other suppliers that say "NATO Style", because they truly are garbage. Thin sheet metal, leaky seams, and ill fitting spouts and caps.

It's pretty sad when you have to smuggle and evade to get quality gas cans. The new EPA pieces of crap spill more gas on the ground than my jerry cans ever release into the air as vapor. I rotate all my gas every six months by burning it in my trucks. Those jerry cans empty fast (not as fast as in a NASCAR pit, but close) and do not spill a drop.

AMEN!!!!!!To Anon at 12:10PM.

The new tanks and their vapor loss fill necks are beyond stupid.

They spill more fuel than EVER evaporated from the old style.

I'd love to find some NOS cans somewhere.

Damn government sticking its nose where it doesn't belong.

Look at old pictures of the British Army fighting in North Africa and you won't have to look very long before you spot vehicles with liberated "Gerry cans" strapped in various places.

Kinda makes you wonder how we won the 2nd World War at all. There are so (TOO) many stories like this. And yet people STILL insist that we all trust the government.
